Extraordinary Magic

New! I arranged and recorded this Ben Rector cover in my living room as a 2022 Valentine’s Day present for my hubby. Ben’s melodies are some of the most fun to sing :)

Waiting on the World

This acoustic version of a popular John Mayer song was the representation of my thesis on protest music at my recital. Featuring Christopher Morse & Greg Purifoy.

Dreamland

My 2007 African-inspired arrangement of a Joni Mitchell favorite, featuring Aussie classmates Dave De Podolinsky (congas), Alena Schneider (mbira) & Gina Mets (vocals).

This popular song by Extreme is so fun to harmonize on! Performed with my sisters Stayc Piecyk (vocals) and Brianna Spoentgen (guitar) at my junior recital in 2008.

A modern twist on an Irish classic, this performance from my 2007 Australian recital is one of my most treasured musical moments. Featuring Andrew Boyle on piano.

Song for the Mira

Another dinner performance with Aussie college friends, this heartwarming Canadian-Celtic folk song is by Allister MacGillivray and arranged for SATB by Stuart Calvert.

Milo

I originally wrote this tango in 2010 for voice, trombone, and rhythm section. I reorchestrated it as a nonet for a 2011 recoding session at WRTI Studios. It has been played regularly on their jazz radio show called “The Bridge”.

The Rooster’s Bounce

In 2008, I wrote my first jazz song by transcribing Charlie Parker’s solo on “Billie’s Bounce” and creating a new bebop-inspired melody over the same progression. This track is an updated version of the tune from my 2011 graduate recital at the University of the Arts. Enjoy the different styles of the blues that are created as we switch back and forth between a New Orleans street beat & straight ahead swing.

Smerfish

I wrote this song for Kevin in 2011. It’s soulful, bluesy, and funky, which for me is love personified through music. I tried to write words, but none ever came. Some emotions can only be expressed through music. Love ya smerf!

This Time the Dream’s On Me / Star Dreamer

I first heard this Mercer/Arlen tune interpreted by Harry Connick, Jr. I loved it so much that I borrowed some of his piano introduction for my 2010 arrangement for vocal jazz ensemble. First you will hear the standard, then my own creation. I improvised a solo, wrote words to it, and added vocal backgrounds in the traditional jazz vocalese style. Listen for both melodies intertwining at the end of the track.

In a Mellow Tone

On this track I’m singing with the University of the Arts vocal jazz ensemble (Jazz Singers) at a 2011 concert. This Duke Ellington standard was arranged by my former teacher Justin Binek. Listen for my scat solo at 2:34 :)

Ghost of a Chance With You / The Crazed Lover

This 2011 arrangement is another exploration of improv and composition. Once again you’ll hear the original standard (Young/Crosby/ Washington) and then my vocalese creation. It’s the story of a person who is in love with someone they’ve never met (probably a celebrity crush). I love that they know they are crazy for having a relationship that exists only in their mind, and yet they are fine with it!
